Generating improvements in professional capacity of our family Hatuchay Hotels

We assume the challenge of working to become better people for this century.  This challenge includes the improvement of our intellectual and spiritual capacity.  Thus, we train through theoretical workshops – practical and, through the exchange of knowledge and experience, our coworkers of  Machu Picchu and Pacaya Samiria; improving their knowledge in sustainable tourism and in specific topics in which they perform. This effort is reflected in the strengthening of the union and  communication between all areas of  Hatuchay Hotels, enriching team work.  As well as improving the quality of our services.
80% of the coworkers of Hatuchay Tower Machu Picchu Hotel come from various provinces of the Cuzco Region and 65% of the coworkers of Pacaya Samiria Amazon Lodge, live in the community of San Jorge, in the Buffer Zone of Pacaya Samiria National Reserve, being 35% remaining in the city of Iquitos.

Experiential learning, Pacaya Samiria National Reserve
In Hatuchay Hotels - Pacaya Samiria, we offer our visitors the opportunity to know, participate and learn about the benefits of Pacaya Samiria National Reserve and the correct use of its resources, that allow to ensure its existence in the future.  This is also possible, thanks to the efforts of our customers, who have participated in the visits made to local communities.

Conservation and Management of flora and fauna with social inclusion, Pacaya Samiria National Reserve - Iquitos

Among the main activities of conservation where they apply management plans for natural resources of the communities we work with, we mention:

  • Conservation of Taricaya: The recovery of species such as the "taricaya" (Podocnemis unifilis), Amazon turtle, in the community of Buenos Aires, Arequipa and Yarina.  This species of turtle or chelonian has been in the list of species endangered within the RNPS by collecting their eggs and wasteful consumption. Due to the formation of management groups, repopulation of the taricaya is being achieved, also allowing improvement in the economy of these communities thanks to the controlled sale of chelonian for export and their eggs for human consumption. We offer our customers, the opportunity to participate on our program “Release an Animal”, returning to its natural habitat (the river), hundreds of taricayas, this is possible during the month of October.
  • Conservation of Palms: Species of  palmas as "Aguaje" (Mauritia flexuosa), "Yarina" (Phytelephas macrocarpa) and Huasai (Euterpe oleracea) in the communities of  Veinte de Enero and Arequipa, where they take advantage of the leaves for the roofs of local homes, some logs for making house walls,  the center of a stem for human consumption and seeds for the production of handicrafts. To harvest the fruit of these palms now it is applied scaling techniques, that can also be practiced by the visitors, since formerly the palm trees were cut to use their resources.
  • Sustainable fishing: Marine resources such as el "paiche" (Arapaima gigas) and "arahuana" (Osteoglossum bicirrhosum) in the community of  San Jacinto, which also allows to repopulate and maintain these fishing resources, use them for local consumption and sale of the meat in a controlled way.

Support in the revaluation of local culture and promotion of its products, Pacaya Samiria National Reserve - Iquitos

We contribute to rescue and revalue “Kukama Kukamiria” local cultura with the presentation of their dances in our facilities, through the clothing of our hosts, through the use of written language applied in the identification of our bungalows and as an important part of our programs.

Since 2006, we support the Craftwomen Committee “PUA KAMATAWARA” (Working Hands) of the Community of San Jorge, who through training and hard work achieved using natural materials in a sustainable and profitable way for the manufacture of their crafts as “chambira”, very tough plant fiber used in the Amazon families for centuries;  “huingo”, unique pumpkin which is carved to represent various motifs and to manufacture different utilitarian articles; various seeds and plants for weaving, necklaces and a variety of crafts.

We encourage the sale of their crafts through visits to  Artisans Home, this allow them to get extra income to improve  their quality of life, value more their culture and be proud of their rich cultural past. Our customers can participate in the workshop  “Manufacturing crafts with the communities”, where they learn to make accessories and various decorative items, with the support of the same women artisans.
